The Long Overdue Makayla Update + 2nd Birthday Extravaganza!

MAKAYLA UPDATE

Where does the time go? I can't believe I let 5 months go by without providing an update. Between preparing for Baby Luke's arrival, spending the last precious months with M, finishing off projects at work, and many of the other unexpected tasks that come with preparing for baby #2 while fighting the 3rd trimester exhaustion, I have not had much time nor energy to provide an update. But alas now is the time..

Language Development

First I'd like to start by saying I love this age. As Makayla's language continues to develop, we see more and more of her personality come out-- it has been such a joy to see her intentions, creativity, and desires expressed through speech.

A few months ago, Makayla started running into our room every morning, greeting us with a very cheerful "Good morning Mommy!" and sometimes a "Good morning Daddy!" And if Daddy's asleep it's usually "Wake up Daddy!" Honestly, I can't think of a more sweeter sounding alarm clock to get me going in the morning.

Over the past few months, her short phrases have evolved into much longer, many times grammatically correct sentences. Just the other day I heard her saying,"I see a monkey tree right over there!" Okay, so I have no idea what a monkey tree is, but it made me stop to reflect on how just a year ago she was barely pointing out single words like "monkey" and "tree" and now she can string words together to make sentences and have back-and-forth coherent conversations with me! And her enunciation and facility for language has been improving day by day. I think I can understand about 80-90% of what she says. I'm in awe of the rapidly developing brain during these early years. No wonder child experts place such a value on making sure children are meeting their milestones and are placed in environments that allow them to thrive, particularly during the first 5 years of life.

Fun phrases. She has been saying cute phrases such as "Oh my gosh!" "Whoa.. look at that!" "Oh man!" "Awesome!" "Oh that's so cool!" "Peekaboo, I see you!" "I can't wait!" My sister's also taught her to say "Doh!" (from The Simpsons) and "Did I do that?" (from Family Matters). One time well before she turned 2, she said "Watch this!" and bent over to eat a pickle with no hands, like a dog. I was both disturbed and impressed at the same time.

Bossy Makayla.  Even before M took the throne as Big Sister, she made sure the world knew who was boss. She can be heard saying "Mommy, sit down properly!" or "Lay down properly!" or "Move!" One night as I was putting her to sleep, she reached over and held my head in her itty bitty hands saying "Look at me! Laying down now!" She says "Come on Mommy, come on!" while taking my hand pulling me in the desired direction.

Curious Makayla.  Most developmental psychologists believe that children have an innate desire to learn. I definitely see this in Makayla. Her favorite things to say are "What doing?" (What are you doing?) or "-- doing?" (E.g., "dog doing?" meaning What is the dog doing?) or "Uh oh what happened?" or "Is zat?" (What is that?) When we went on the It's A Small World ride at Disneyland, I pointed out the different animals to her as we were floating by. I would saying something like "it's a polar bear!" and she would follow up with "polar bear doing?" and this went on and on the entire ride.

Independent Makayla.  Part of the struggle with the Terrible Twos is the desire for toddlers to be independent. When M walks up or down stairs or jungle gym, if she senses we are nearby and trying to protect her, she'll turn around and say "No, move!" M wants to eat by herself, wash her hands by herself. In fact, she's often heard saying "By myself!"

Satisfied/Frustrated Makayla.  Because M is now feeling more independent, her actions, depending on her success or failure, elicit feelings of satisfaction or frustration. When she's satisfied, she often gets super excited, exclaiming "I did it! I did it!" When she's frustrated, she'll sometimes throw tantrums. For example, she gets frustrated when her blocks fall down or when she has a hard time putting a diaper on her baby doll. Sometimes she acknowledges her inability to do something with sentences like "I can't do it." or "I can't reach it."

"Look, same!"/"Too!"  For the past few months, M has been walking around identifying things that are the same. For example, she forced Eric to draw all of the Yo Gabba Gabba characters on the easel and would then take her Yo Gabba Gabba stuffed animals one by one, walk up to the easel and saying "Look, same!" She also notices when she is doing something while I am doing something at the same time.
M: "Mommy doing?"
Me: "Mommy's eating noodles."
M: "Makayla eating noodles too!"

M will also use the word "too" to express her desire to do something that someone is already doing. One day she saw Jed kicking around a soccer ball so she said "Makayla soccer too!" which meant that she also wanted to play soccer.

Answering Questions.  Early on, M showed an understanding for how questions should be answered. When I asked "How many... are there?" she would respond by counting. When I asked "Why..?" she would respond with "Cuz.." When I asked "What..?" she would respond with "Hmm.. let's see.."

Manners. Early on, M was great at saying "Thank you", now not so much. She is also learning to say "Please". Although we didn't expect it, M also found it fun to say "welcome!" (you're welcome) when someone thanked her and "Bless you" when anyone sneezed. On the cruise we taught her how to do "cheers" and she has been saying it a lot since.

"I" and "You"  As mentioned in my last update post, an important milestone in language development is the appropriate use of "I" and "you". Makayla is now using 3rd person "Makayla" very infrequently and instead using "I" more frequently. For example, instead of saying "Makayla is watching TV" she is more likely to say "I am watching TV."

Not only is she now substituting "I" where she would have used "Makayla", but she is also using "I" to create sentences. For example, she used to say "more please" but now she says "I want more please."

Makayla seems to be using "you" properly. but still uses names often. For example, she still says "Mommy get it" to me rather than "You get it". She sometimes makes "you" errors which is common. When I say, "Do you want me to read to you?", she'll respond with "Read to you" instead of "Read to me."

Counting. She was able to count (more like recite) to 20 in English and count to 10 in Chinese when she was around 21 months old. In recent months, I've noticed that M is getting better and better at accurately counting objects. Specifically, I think she understands now that once an object has been counted, it doesn't get counted again. However, she doesn't have a strategy to remember which items have been counted so she often recounts items.

Physical Development
When M was 22 months old, she contracted a very mild case of the dreaded Hand, Foot, Mouth Disease. Fortunately she didn't seem too bothered by it but it gave us all quite a scare.

During M's 2 year well-check, M measured 36 inches tall, scoring her in the 96th percentile for height and 89th percentile in weight. Her height percentage is proportionally higher than her weight percentage, which means she is really beginning to thin out. Bye bye rolls!

Gross Motor Development
She started jumping a few months before turning 2 and is enjoying her new achievement all the time. She especially loves jumping if she's particularly excited to see someone.

Fine Motor Development
M is very good at self feeding. She prefers a spoon to fork which makes things quite messy but it's great that M is so much more self sufficient during mealtimes.

Socio-Emotional Development
M has been learning about emotions and has also been actively using emotion words. She has become increasingly fearful of things-- bugs, dogs, cats, the dark, sometimes babies.. Even Mommy or Daddy. Basically anything that moves on its own. I've also heard her say "Why are you so sad?" "I'm so mad!" during pretend play. A lot of times she'll comment on a dog being sad. I suppose dogs do always look a bit sad!

Most of play at this age is still parallel play where kids play alongside each other but are not playing with each other. M has always been pretty good at interacting with other adults. Now, I'm beginning to see M interact with other kids.  M tried to tickle her friend Sharon. M ran around chasing her friend Daniel. M always tries to engage me in play. She doesn't like it when we are sitting at the park playing sand and she is playing but I'm not. She says "Mommy shovel!"

Interestingly, her choice of toys also reflects in increased interest in social interaction. At home, she has plenty of toys, but she seems to prefer her Sesame Street and Little Peoples figurines. She likes making them talk to each other and even occasionally changes the intonation of her voice to pretend her figurines are talking.

Also, her pretend play is getting more sophisticated. For example, in a little corner in her room, she reaches for her pretend rocks and hands them to me and Eric. She likes to make pretend soup. At the park, she loves making birthday cakes in the sand, then she'll stick a twig in them and blow on them as if she's blowing out a birthday candle.

She is also beginning to understand the concept of taking turns. A lot of times she'll say "my turn!" when she wants to do something. Although there's not much need to take turns at home, we point out to her that sometimes we wait in line for our turn. For example, when we went to visit Elmo at Sea World, M was so eager to cut in line to see him. I had to explain to her that we had to wait our turn. One day, Raissa told all the kids to clean up, and M says to her "your turn!" :)

2ND BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

For M's second birthday, we decided to keep it low key but at the same time make it memorable.  We had a small family dinner for her in LA and her godparents and godsis celebrated with us over dinner and some cake.

We also wanted to spend some quality time with M during her last month as an only child. The weekend before her birthday, we took a short trip to San Diego, spending 2 days at Sea World. M enjoyed seeing the animals, particularly the beluga whale. She also had a blast at the Sesame Street Bay of Play and got a bit starstruck meeting her Sesame Street friends in person!

On M's birthday, we took her to Disneyland for the day. It was a bit overwhelming for her, but in a good way, I think. She got a bit starstruck meeting Minnie Mouse and Princess Belle. She seemed to enjoy all the rides and since Mommy was pregnant, M got to enjoy the rides with Daddy.

PREPARING FOR BABY LUKE

The month prior to Baby Luke's arrival, I made sure to spend lots of quality time with M. Some highlights included going to the awesome pumpkin patch at the Irvine Regional Park, Pretend City, and of course Sea World and Disneyland.

I was confident that M would absolutely love her baby brother but that it would take a bit of adjustment so we prepared her by simply talking to her about Baby Luke being in mommy's tummy (one night she pointed to my belly and asked me to open it!) and reading some big sister books.
We also had her pick out a present to give to Baby Luke. Clever Makayla ended up picking out toys that she liked and saying she wanted to give them to Baby Luke (e.g., a princess grocery cart). I'll save the update about Makayla and Luke for another post.

Some fun places M's visited:
Kidspace Museum
La Habra Museum
Newport Beach Library

Happy Fourth of July!

Since Eric had to study for his exam, M and I got to spend some quality time together. We went to Heritage Park close to our house. I found it on yelp. It's a no-frills kind of a park and a bit older than many of the other parks in the city, but it is a real gem. There's a manmade lake with ducks, a fun playground, a library, and a community center. People were setting up tents already before noon, probably in preparation for the fireworks show from the high school nearby. We also saw a mommy duck + a few baby ducks following behind. M loved it! I asked her how many ducks there were and she said "One, two, three! Three baby ducks!"

Happy July 4th!

Happy 20th and 21st Month Birthday Makayla!

I'm well into my pregnancy now, 22 weeks at the moment. The energy has come back and the excitement is growing, and... it's a BOY! Supposedly this baby boy is currently the size of a papaya but it looks like he is the size of a watermelon already. During our 20 week ultrasound, it showed him moving around like crazy but I couldn't feel him at all. But a few days after the appointment, I began feeling him kicking away. I'm already getting tired thinking about chasing after baby boy.

But anyway, this post is supposed to be about Makayla so here goes.. you get a 2fer again this time.  Much of M's development continues to be in the area of language. I've already given up jotting down all of the words she speaks because I just can't keep up anymore. Not only that, but I also know that I don't hear a lot of the words M says so there's really no point in continuing the list.

When M turned 19 months old, she started speaking in 2 word phrases much more often. Fun fact: I read somewhere that children start speaking in phrases when they have learned about 50 words. In the beginning, she was using possessives "Mommy's chair", "Daddy's water" (not sure if she was actually using 's'). Then she moved onto using noun + verb "Elmo fall" or even noun + present participle "Daddy's sleeping".  She's also beginning to use pronouns: he, I. The transition from using self- and other- referring names (e.g., "Makayla" and "Mommy") to personal pronouns (e.g., "I" and "you") is an important one and we are beginning to see the transition now-- how exciting! My research professor and I published a paper on parent input relating to child's acquisition of personal pronouns a few years ago (see abstract here: http://www.researchgate.net/publication/232846271_Can_Toddy_Give_Me_an_Orange_Parent_Input_and_Young_Children's_Production_of_I_and_You). Can you imagine how excited I was when I first heard Makayla say "I"?!

When she turned 20 months old, she moved onto more 3 word phrases as well as speech expressing desire (e.g., "I want it"). Occasionally she'll surprise us with certain more advanced sentences/phrases such as "I wanna watch Yo Gabba Gabba", "Let me sit down" or "Go away" both in Chinese and English. In fact, Eric was commenting on how weird it was that he can have a back and forth conversation with M. Nowadays she doesn't babble much, and when she does, she does it on purpose and smiles at us because she knows she's being silly.

More important than but related to the quantity of the words M knows and can put together is her ability to communicate with us through speech. One word in particular is the word "owie" because she is very good about telling us what body part is in pain and we can help take care of her pain. She also holds out her hands during or after meals and says "wipe hands" in Chinese. I also appreciate when she says "Mommy help", "Mommy hold me" in Chinese, or "cold". It has really reduced the amount of crying or whining.

One really exciting development is her ability to identify most of the letters in the alphabet. One day, we were at Costco, and she started correctly pointing out the letters written on the shopping cart. Before that point, every letter was an 'A' or 'O' :)  Since then, she has been excited to point out letters when she sees them, her favorite being W, probably because it's so fun to say. She is also now a pro at identifying colors and basic shapes.
I have caught Makayla talking in her sleep a few times, which means she dreams (she probably has been for awhile now). She said "Bubbles, Mommy, Daddy, Choo Choo Train, and Foofa" all in her sleep.

Makayla can count.. well, sort of :)  She understands that when someone says "How many ants are there?" that she's supposed to count them. She doesn't quite understand that each object corresponds to each number, however. If there are 3 flowers on a page, she will recount flowers and end up with 5. If there are 10 ants, she will count 3 ants, and then stop.

Her memory amazes me. We have recently introduced her to the book "Brown Bear, Brown Bear". She has loved the book ever since we started singing it to her. It didn't take her long to memorize the sequence of animals that appear in the book.

M has begun to scream a lot. Thank God it's not your typical toddler temper tantrum scream, which I'm sure we'll encounter within the next year. It's this high pitched I'm happy and I feel like screaming. It's delightful and disturbing at the same time :)

We (including Raissa) are continuing to expose M to new experiences. Within these past 2 months, M has gone to the LA Zoo, Pretend City, Elmo's musical, Long Beach Aquarium, Bubblefest (at the Discovery Science Center), Alaska/Canada/Seattle cruise. We have also started taking her to swimming lessons (on top of ballet and MyGym). In the beginning, she loved being in the pool but really did not like getting held by the instructor. She has since come a long way and is now going through the steps like pro!

Makayla anecdotes:

Raissa has a green stick she keeps around the house for punishment. It doesn't really get used but comes out every once in awhile when the boys are out of line as a threat. One day Raissa was yelling at Jed for something he had done. M gets ahold of the green stick and walks toward Jed as he awaits his punishment ;)

Raissa keeps the door to her mom's room closed so M can't get in to rummage around. One day, M noticed that the door was open. She then glanced at Raissa's mom who was busy in the kitchen cooking. M slowly walked toward the bedroom while keeping her eyes on Raissa's mom to make sure she could sneak in without getting caught. Of course Raissa was witnessing all of this as it was happening :)

One day, Eric was drinking coffee from his mug. M points to the mug and says "coffee, I want some"

Hi from Alaska!

We are currently on our 2nd official family vacation enjoying a trip on an Alaskan cruise. It is my first cruise experience and obviously M's as well and it's been great so far! First off, I just want to say that cruises are really great for couples with young children (esp if your parents are also onboard and ready and willing to help-- thanks mom and dad!). Babies get so much attention from all the older guests who enjoy watching the little ones running around. It is also fairly safe. Aside from making sure M doesn't get trampled by people or trip a waiter, we do not have to worry about cars. M is enjoying the glass elevators, elevator buttons, hand sanitizers, showers, beds, and ocean view. I don't think she enjoys all the attention she's getting but she is definitely having fun with the free toys she gets just by being cute (more on that later).

After spending the first two days at sea, we docked at Juneau this afternoon. Eric and I were both excited and nervous about the stop. On the one hand, we've been cooped up in a ship for 2 days so obviously we welcomed the fresh air and change of scenery. On the other hand, we weren't sure how to navigate a foreign area with a toddler who loves her freedom and hates sitting in strollers. It actually went surprisingly well. We made sure M got a nice nap and full tummy before disembarking. Once we walked down the ramp, we were greeted by a moose, a person dressed in a moose outfit that is. M loved the moose and all the bystanders loved watching M interact with the moose. We then put her in the stroller, no fight. What?! Yup, not a single sign of protest. Eric and I had decided earlier not to sign up for excursions. We wanted to enjoy the scenery and relax a bit without any added stress. So we walked along the streets visiting the shops. Though M wasn't too fussy, we decided she needed to be tired out a little, so we let her out of the stroller. Nervously following her closely from one shop to the other, we were so relieved to find a toy shop. M was immediately attracted to the train table on display. After playing with the trains for at least 15 minutes, the friendly cashier gave M a Chuggington train. I guess they must get samples from the vendor that they're not allowed to sell so M was the lucky recipient of a nice new green train. She was overjoyed! Seriously, these little trains retail for $10-15.

We later walked into a random tshirt shop. After walking in and out of the shop, M decided she walked to go back... 3 more times, every time saying hi and bye to the shop owner. On the third time, the shop owner offered her a rhino beanie baby telling me that he couldn't sell it because it didn't say Alaska on it! How odd, but cool! So I guess it does pay to be cute.

Afterwards, we headed over to the famous Tracy's Crab Shack where we devoured crab cakes, crab legs and crab bisque. Omg totally lived up to the hype! After that we decided M had had enough for one day. We were so surprised how pleasant she was in Juneau and ecstatic to have not spent a single penny on her two new souvenirs.

We didn't see much in Juneau but that's ok. We wanted this trip to be as stress free as possible and most of all, about celebrating M.. Enjoying her quirky behaviors, laughing at her cute statements, finding joy in all the things that bring her joy, watching her sleeping so peacefully.. Just making sure to treasure every moment while it lasts.

Happy 18th & 19th Month Birthday Makayla!

Oh how time flies! I am almost 15 weeks pregnant with Baby #2 and only beginning to feel better from the "night-sickness" I've been experiencing for the last 2 months. This is the main reason why I have not been good about updating the blog. Since I missed last month's update, you will get a 2fer this time.

Although babies develop so quickly within the first 2 years of life, there are some months where their development seems to occur a bit more quickly and abruptly than others. For Makayla, I've noticed particularly drastic changes in month 3 (2 months old) when she started becoming very social, month 9 (8 months old) when she developed object permanence and subsequently separation anxiety, and month 13 (12 months old) when she seemed to have increased receptive language and desire for independence. Recently, during month 18 (17 months old) she seems to have improved immensely in her expressive language and maybe related to this, an improvement in her desire to communicate with others. Even though I am writing a 2 month update, many of these developments occurred prior to her 18th month birthday.

Cognitive development:

3-step commands- M can respond to commands really well now. She follows 3-step commands: go to the room, get the wipes, give the wipes to aiyi. This is significant because it uses expressive language and memory, both of which have come a long way since birth.

Symbolic play- M substitutes items for actual items. One day, Emily, Makayla and I stopped by at a local starbucks to grab a quick drink before heading to the Irvine Regional Park. Emily gave her a cup sleeve and a drink stopper to play with. This is what she did: [video to come]
Pretend play- M loves to play with her stuffed animals. She is still really into her buckles, but instead of simply buckling her high chair buckles, she will now look for a stuffed animal, put it in the high chair, buckle the stuffed animal in, asks us to put on the tray and sometimes a bib, and occasionally tries to feed the stuffed animal. She also brushes their teeth, combs their hair, pats them in the back, puts blankets on them, and sings "naptime" to them.  She loves picking up the phone and saying "Hello- oh oh- otay-otay-bubye!"  These are all examples of early forms of pretend play which tends to emerge alongside the development of pretense, receptive and expressive language, and mental representation. I absolutely love watch M participating in pretend play as these are moments when her personality comes out. But more than just watching M "being cute", it's nice to be reminded that M is actually displaying huge developmental leaps. Here is an excerpt about the importance of pretend play:

"There is a growing body of evidence supporting the many connections between cognitive competence and high-quality pretend play. If children lack opportunities to experience such play, their long-term capacities related to metacognition, problem solving, and social cognition, as well as to academic areas such as literacy, mathematics, and science, may be diminished. These complex and multidimensional skills involving many areas of the brain are most likely to thrive in an atmosphere rich in high-quality pretend play."
~ Doris Bergen, The Role of Pretend Play in Children's Cognitive Development

Language development:

Makayla is like a human sponge these days. She says a lot of animals like cat, dog, duck, pig, horse, fish, giraffe, lion (yiyon). She knows different articles of clothing like hat, shoes (in chinese and english), socks. Last month she enjoyed pointing to body parts when we asked. This month, she points to the body parts herself and says them, such as eyes, nose mouth, feet, ears, bee boo (belly button). In fact, she loves poking people in the face to identify their body parts. Other words she says include moon, star, heart, flower, apple, choo choo train, airplane, car, water, book, house, keys, bubble, buckle, door, apple sauce, noodle (noo-noll). When she finishes reading a book, she closes it as says "the end, tada!" Words she used to sign, she now speaks, such as more, please, all done. There are too many words to keep track of!

She has also learned to say the word "no"........ enough said.

She’s really starting to get good at identifying people by name. She says "Aiyi" for Raissa, and identifies the rest of her family Jojo, Jed and Mike. Jeremiah is just "baby". She also correctly identifies grandma and grandpa (in chinese), her uncle Jeff "Jeff", her auntie Emily "Emy". She also knows the name of a lot of her tv friends-- she randomly lists all of the yo gabba gabba characters, Chicca, Caillou, Super Why (Why), Elmo, Ernie, Zoe, Cookie Monster (Tootie).

She’s also started using verbs like sleep, eat, fall, jump, sit, fly.

She’s starting to speak 2 word sentences. Mostly it's simple like "Hi Elmo". She also says “I love you” and “how are you”.

One of the coolest things we discovered was that she can recite her ABCs with the exception of the letters L, M, N, and O. When she sings her ABCs, she sings "H-I-J-K-uh-uh-uh-uh-P" hahaha. M also counts from 2-10. We are not quite sure why she doesn't say 1.. Maybe because we usually say it for her.

She pretend reads (as seen on the video) by moving her hand along the words of a book while babbling and knows that reading occurs from left to right.

Socio-Emotional development:
M is talking more to other kids. One day when we were at small group, Sharon walks toward the TV, when suddenly, M walks up to her and wags finger at Sharon while babbling as if to say "You can't touch the TV".  I wish I had gotten it on video!

M is increasingly interested in Baby J. When he's crying she says "shh shh" and "it's otay it's otay".

She is also imitating other behaviors modeled to her. For example, one morning she wrapped a pillowcase around her neck like a cape. I realized she was probably imitating Raissa's boys when they dress up like superheroes. The same morning, she grabbed some tweezers and tried opening the door with them, similar to how I use my keys to open the door.

Gender identity development- although M usually hangs out with boys and has exposure to plenty of boy toys, she does appear to prefer girly things. She loves to wear skirts, dresses, bracelets, necklaces, purses. When you tell her she looks pretty, she gives a cute smirk.

Gross motor development:

Makayla walks on her tippy toes.

Fine motor development:

M has suddently become interested in writing/scribbling. She holds a pencil or crayon pretty well.

M can stack more than 3 blocks on top of each other, although I think she much prefers to knock them down.

M can now complete puzzles on her own.

Physical development:

Remember how Makayla grew 4 teeth last month? Well she sprouted 4 more during these past 2 months. Her canines and molar on bottom are now in. She has 4 more teeth to come in, likely closer to her 2nd birthday.

Some new adventures:

I've been trying to venture out and explore new environments with Makayla. Here are some new adventures we've had the past few months.

- Kidseum- I think this kid's museum is fantastic for older children but Makayla we spent almost the entire time walking on the pretend bridge
- Irvine Regional Park- Makayla had a fun time on the train
- Visit with the Easter Bunny at Fashion Island
- Bubblefest- with Raissa at Discovery Science Center. This was perfect for her since she's been really interested in bubbles lately. I hope to take her myself next year.
- Newport Beach Public Libaray- the children's section was supposed to be pretty cool, but again, I think more fun when she's a bit older and can actually read.
- Santa Ana Zoo- not a great zoo but certainly good enough for a 1.5 year old
- Bubble bath!
- Makayla's first ballet class- Makayla now takes ballet with Raissa every Tuesdays. Who knew babies could take ballet?!

Hello? Bu-bye!
